Adenomyosis

What is Adenomyosis?

Adenomyosis is a condition in which the tissues forming the inner lining of the uterus (endometrial tissue) start growing into the muscular wall of the uterus (the myometrium). These displaced tissues can either be present at one spot or can be located throughout. During each menstrual cycle, these tissues thicken up and break down resulting to bleed. Thus, Adenomyosis can cause heavy and painful periods.

Symptoms

Often the medical condition of adenomyosis shows no signs and symptoms. However, it leads to:

  • Chronic pain in the pelvic region
  • Abdominal pressure and bloating
  • Prolonged and heavy bleeding
  • Severe menstrual cramps
